Amazon's major summer shopping event Prime Day is reportedly being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Prime Day is being postponed "at least until August," according to a report Friday from Reuters.
Amazon's Prime Day became one of the biggest internet shopping holidays, even bigger than Black Friday. In 2019, Amazon said it sold 175 million items during the 48-hour shopping event, surpassing Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales combined. Amazon’s own products also typically get a big sales boost during the sale, the company didn’t break out specific sales figures for devices sold during Prime Day last year, but said it was the “biggest event ever for Amazon devices.” Amazon also said that last year’s two days of Prime Day were the “two biggest days ever for member signups.”
By delaying Prime Day this year, the company expects to possibly take a $100 million hit as a result of extra devices it may have to sell at a discount.
