How to Choose the Best Broadband Internet Connection? Broadband Connection Buying Tips

Since when the pandemic has started many people are doing work from home and online classes, so one can't do all such things on mobile data as nowadays rates of data are rising, after the mobile data there is also another option of broadbands. In today's time, how can we get the best possible deals?

Nowadays penetration has increased, there is Airtel, Jio, and many other local operators that provide broadband connections.

While buying an internet connection, you often talk about the speed and price, as almost everybody wants better service at the best possible price, then comes the data gap, if you're getting an unlimited data plan or limited data plan with a higher data limit or minimum 500 GB data limit, then we can say it's a decent plan. One important point is that most people misunderstood that, reliability of the connection. For example, suppose you have a connection of 100 Mbps for which you have to pay around Rs 300 but it frequently cuts, or when needed it doesn't give the appropriate speed it should give. For such reasons reliability of the connection is needed, So the reliability and the connection speed can only be known after getting the brochure or after paying the bill, to stay away from such problems the best thing you can do is do research in your area that which service providers are there that people are using and then shortlist from that, after that you can take reviews from the users of your area that is the connection is good or bad and then you can choose easily.

So if you're going to take broadband connection, then keep in mind that other than seeing the connection speed and price, you have to see how reliable the connection is, and does it cuts frequently or not, after that you should check that what type of line they are providing if they are providing a fiber cable then it's good but if the provider is providing the ADSL cable, then you should say to their connection, as a normal ADSL cable will result in fluctuation in the connection and in the rainy days the speed of the internet might also downgrade, and moreover, it's not future proof and you can't enjoy the high speed of internet on this, so if the provider is providing fiber then this is a good thing and one should prefer fiber only. Suppose you have preferred fiber, now it comes to how much data you're getting, if you're getting unlimited data then it's great, but if you're getting limited data then you should get a minimum of 500 GB data, as nowadays people are watching online videos, attending online classes, online meeting, and if you're a bit heavy user, watching movies on OTT and watching videos on 4K then you 1 TB will be sufficient for you, you can go over 1 TB that's on your choice.

500 GB should be the minimum data available as nowadays penetration has increased resulting in increasing the data consumption also, so below 500 GB is mostly too exhausted quickly.

Now it comes to speed, for example, a normal zoom call can run on 1 - 4 Mbps, one full HD YouTube video can run on 5 Mbps, and from 10-15 Mbps one 4K video can be run, so basically if there are less number of users in your house then 20-30 Mbps connection will do the work. Let's take the example of Jio, in Jio's base plan which costs around Rs 400 excluding GST, that give you 30 Mbps, for 90% of the people of India 30 Mbps speed is sufficient for them, as 90% make their work done with 30 Mbps easily at least in today's time, under which you can watch 4K videos, you can watch online movies, you can update applications, etc. After the 90% people, 9% of people only need the 100 Mbps connection, it is recommended for those who have a 4K TV in their home and you have already cut your cable or DTH connection and completely rely on OTT for watching movies, and for those who do heavy downloads or those who upload videos on YouTube, or you're doing heavy office-level work where you have to share large files and all, for the 100 Mbps connection will be sufficient, depending upon the number of devices connected to it, if you're working in an office then 100 Mbps connection might not be sufficient for you, but if it is for regular usage in the home within a family of 7-8 people then it will be sufficient.

Now suppose you've also taken subscriptions of 1-2 OTT applications and some of the free OTT apps also, so if you're paying for 1-2 things and also for the internet then it will be generally cheaper, but if you're paying for internet bill and as well as you've taken 3-4 OTT subscriptions then it will cost you a little higher. Now here comes Airtel and Jio, they provide a bundle of OTT application subscription with the internet plan,  so if you're using more than 2-3 OTT Applications then the bundles will be a better option for you as it will be a better deal, only if you watch OTT most of the times then it will be worth for you or else you can take them separately.

There is a myth about speed, that when do we need high speed, as in many places local service providers comes and says take 300 Mbps or take 500 Mbps speed connections you'll get high speed and nowadays Jio also promotes 1 Gbps connections, so the things are, does it's worth for us? So the top 1% people only need a connection speed of 100 Mbps, and above, it is worth only if you have a gaming console at your home or you have a PC at your home, and you keep on downloading huge game often, other then that it is of no use or you have multiple devices at home, computers are connected, and you're working on an office level then it would be needed; otherwise, it is useless for the 99% of the people, or if you want to do gaming then you can make the connection of 300 Mbps, it also doesn't make sense for connection above 300 Mbps. For example, Jio is providing a 150 Mbps plan for around Rs 1000, with many OTT apps are also included, if you like OTT apps then it will be a good plan for you as you get many OTT apps with it and a good connection speed also, after that plan then comes the 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps plans which are of no use. In India 1 Gbps plans have already entered and people are getting 1 Gbps plans, but people are unable to use the 1 Gbps properly, as if you want to use it properly then you have to connect an Ethernet cable or Cat 6 cable from the router to the computer, and the computer should be a high-end computer so that it can control the higher speed, that means RAM, SSD, good processor, etc and after that, you can enjoy the 1 Gbps plan. If you want to enjoy the plan on your WiFi then you have to get a high-end WiFi 6 router, and basically, the normal WiFi 6 router which is present in the market can not support the 1 Gbps speed at all, to use the 1 Gbps speed connection you have to take a high-end WiFi 6 router which will cost around Rs 10,000 - 15,000, not only router but the device which you will be using, have to support WiFi 6 also otherwise you can't enjoy the speed.

So concept-wise 1 Gbps speed is very good but practical implementation is not properly available yet. It might be available in the future, maybe after 5,6 years. Overall before going for a broadband connection, you not only have to see the price and speed, you have to see the reliability also, and the service that they are providing is good or bad. From our personal option, if you don't need to call the customer care then it's the best possible service available and if you need to call the customer care frequently then it's the worst service provider.

Here, people shouldn't only see the price of the plan, people should also see how long the plan is. You shouldn't make plans for more than 3-6 months as many times internet service providers fraud with people with different ads. Before opting for a plan, one should ask someone if which service provider is better or is it reliable or you could ask the provider for a refundable trial so that if the connection is not appropriate then you can just refund it and return the router and change the connection.
