It seems like Google is making its own processor. Previous year's news has come that Google is developing their own processor and Sundar Pichai had also said that they were working on the Hardware and chip-level of the mobile phone. After seeing a few leaks we can assume that this year you might get to see Google's own processor in Google's Pixel 3 or ChromeBook or in any other device of Google. And yes here we'll be going feature about Google Silicon which means Google's Processor.
So at first, this is not the first time that Google has attempted to make processors. Do you know? Google's Pixel Visual Core is a special chipset by Google that is found in their Pixel Smartphone, which helps in better processing and you get to see better images. Not only this, a special chip called Titan m security which is present in Google's Pixel phones which give you additional security, i.e, Google has experience in making chips for mobile phones but till date, they were making chips because they were not getting such quality product from Samsung, MediaTek or Qualcomm. In short, Google didn't have the trust on the ISPs of Qualcomm's Snapdragon, so they have made their own Pixel Visual Core chip and also they didn't trust the security of others so they have decided to make Titan m security, similarly now it seems like they don't trust processor of other companies so they are making their own chipset.
Google Silicon ARM-based SOC
In the coming days, Google is taking the designs of ARM Company and by using that design they are making their own chipset, for now, news has come that it will be based on Samsung's 5nm technology, but this doesn't mean that Samsung's Exynos is coming. Google is taking help from Samsung's Fabrication and Technology and taking over the designing part on their own. Similarly, Samsung has also fabricated many chips and processors for Apple, Similarly, they will do the same for Google also. Here the key focus is on Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence, it is because is it seen that Google always used AI and Machine learning in almost everything, like their Softwares and Hardware you'll get to see at least something, and they wanted to take this thing to an advance and a level up, and they know that the processor which are available nowadays might not able to take the load. So from the leaks, we can say, with Machine Learner and AI you'll also get to see Tensor Processing Unit. The Codeword of this chipset is kept as GS101 which means Google Silicon.
Google Silicon Core Information
Do you know how the cores and internal structure will be in it? You'll get two 2 high-performance Cortex A78 cores and 2 Mid-Core with A76 Architecture and 4 Power Saving Cores with A55 Architecture, and this will be based on Samsung's 5nm Technology. This Processor won't be as fast as the latest Snapdragon 800 series processor, let us say Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, this Google Silicon processor can't compete with the Snapdragon 888 but this processor of Google's will give tough competition to Snapdragon's 700 series processor.
Why Google is making its own Processor?
This same question might come to your mind why Google is making their own processor while leaving behind Qualcomm as they are making better Processors than them? Its answer is exactly Google doesn't have full control in their hands, they are making mobile phones in the Pixel lineup but the chipset which is installed in them are of Qualcomm and they have to provide a driver also, whenever they have to bring a new android version, the whole software support is in the hands of Qualcomm, if in the future Qualcomm discontinues its processor and stop releasing drivers for that then Google can't provide and latest android update in their phones. Because of this reason, you'll get to see major software updates of 3 years in the Google Pixel phone, but here Google wants to change the story by giving major software updates for 5 years. So in the future, you might get to see software support for 5 years or more, This is something just like Apple iPhones, they also provide longer software support. You'll get to see a minimum of 5 years of Software support in Apple's phone, and Google also wants to implement the same story here, and they know if they make their own processor and software then they can provide a similar user experience as Apple's.
Now Google is planning to compete with Apple, here both Google and Apple's complete thinking ness is coming into use. In past Apple has made their own processor, they had even ditched Intel and introduced their M1 Chips, similarly the same goes for Google's processors, this doesn't mean you'll get to see it in Pixel 6. Rumours says that in the upcoming ChromeBook or any other products of Google, you might get to see Google's Chipset somewhere in them. It means they are working on a processor that will be implemented everywhere, and they know this well that there is a good power efficiency in ARM-based Chips and can give good performance with less battery and less heating. That's why the company is slowly and steadily making the transition towards ARM-based technology.
We might get to see some hints at the developer conference of Google, which happens every year. But Yes, the processor and the chip made by Google will be good and you could get to see good things in the Tensor Processor Unit and Machine Learning.
