You might be wondering if you can install Windows 11 on your PC right away after Microsoft revealed it at its event last night. If your answer is yes, when will you be able to try out all of Windows 11's new exciting features? That is precisely what we will address in this article.
Windows 11 Update Timeline
Before we get started, it's worth noting that you can check out the Windows 11 system requirements or use the new PC Health Check app to see if your PC can run Windows 11. Here's when you'll get the Windows 11 update if your PC is eligible.
When to Expect Windows 11 Update for Insiders
Microsoft has announced that the first Insider Preview builds for Windows 11 will be released next week. Sign up for the Insider program from “Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Insider Program” straight now if you want to receive a sneak peek at Windows 11. However, proceed with caution because it is not completely stable and you may encounter bugs and crashes. We recommend installing the preview build on a secondary PC.
You'll get the Insider build as soon as Microsoft releases it if your PC fulfills the hardware requirements. Moreover, if a user is already in the Dev Channel, Microsoft will allow them to test Windows 11 even if their PC does not satisfy the minimum requirements. These users, on the other hand, are more prone to have random issues here and there.
Moreover, this distribution is only for Windows 11 Insider builds. Devices that do not meet the minimum specification requirements will not receive the stable version of Windows 11. While you can test Windows 11 on your old PC, once the stable Windows 11 build is released, you will no longer receive updates. As a result, after the initial trial period, you'll have to switch back to Windows 10.
When to Expect Windows 11 Stable Update
In terms of a stable Windows 11 release date, Microsoft has confirmed that the Windows 11 update rollout will begin in late 2021. The rollout will be completed in 2022. It may take some time for Windows 11 to reach your PC, as it does with other Windows updates.
For users looking to buy new Windows PCs, Microsoft's Chief Product Officer Panos Panay says in an official blog post that the company has teamed with Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Surface, and other brands to ensure that the vast majority of PCs and laptops on the market today are ready for Windows 11. Microsoft suggests looking for PCs that say they're qualified for the free upgrade or double-checking with your retailer. You can always check your PC's eligibility with the PC Health Check app.
Get Windows 11 on your PC
That is when you will be able to install Windows 11 on your computer. If your computer passes the eligibility test, you can expect to receive the update later this year or early in 2022.
