Does Gorilla Glass Makes Sense for a Smartphone?

Does Gorilla Glass Makes Sense for a Smartphone?

Nowadays, most phones are coming up with the Corning Gorilla Glass on them. Still, the question is, does Corning Gorilla Glass 3,4,5, and Victus, and even in iPhones, you get to see Ceramic Shield? Does that makes really make sense, and does it exactly makes a difference in the mobile? Is the presence of this feature necessary, or has it become an unnecessary feature that has become a reason for marketing so that you pay more for it in the name of premium. So let's find out what exactly it is.

Where has Gorilla Glass started from?

Well, it was started from Apple's iPhone. Steve Jobs didn't want that the protection given on the first iPhone shouldn't be of plastic, it should come with a premium feel and come with glass on it. So he approached Corning, and from there, Corning Gorilla Glass has started. Apple itself has invested in Corning company to make special glasses like Ceramic Shield for Apple.

What Makes Gorilla Glass Special?

It is basically like normal glass, but it has a special coating on it which provides additional protection to the glass. Well, it is a chemically strengthened glass. Corning is not only the one who makes such glasses. Many other companies like Dragon Trail, AGC Asahi Corporation, Shot Sensation also make such glasses. With these, you also get to see Panda Glass, H3 glass, and many more glasses. Well, one thing is common in all of these, all are glass only, and it can break. After all, they all are glass, but they have good scratch resistance. Almost all the glasses that you get to see in the market get scratches of level 7 mostly. If you want more better scratch resistance, then you have to use Saphire in it.

Different Coming Gorilla Glass

If all of the glasses are coming with similar scratch resistance, why is Corning bringing different glasses? Every new generation of glass comes with similar scratch protection, but it also comes with improved drop protection. Well, if we say about Corning Gorilla Glass 5, it won't shatter if it falls on a rough surface from a height of 1.6 meters. The latest Corning Gorilla Glass Victus is made so that if it falls from a height of 6 feet 6 inches, then it wouldn't shatter. It is only about the free fall. We're not talking about any tight impacts. If your phone falls in a particular angle and position, anything can happen, but it won't shatter if it is falling a normal drop.

Gorilla Glass Doesn't give any Guarantee

Well, it is not fully confirmed that any problem wouldn't arise in the phone, the internal components of the phone might displace, and scratches might come in the glass. No matter how much the company claims, scratches will come, and dents also come on the glass, and in some cases, it might shatter as well. All of these depend on how it has fallen, from where it was, how it has been impacted by an external object, etc. Companies like Corning make their glasses a little bit thinner, which benefits in fast wireless, so if you want to use the fast wireless charging concept, then the glass has to be as thin as possible. Nowadays, glass is being used to give a premium finish to the phone, look and feel can be improved, and definitely making the glass thin will also help make the phone slim. Nowadays, after the implementation of 5G, the thickness and the weight of the phones are increasing for controlling that a company helps them. It can decrease the weight and thickness of the phone a little, but it is not making any big impact here.

Every Glass which is there in the market is more or less the same. All are equally scratch-resistant, but the thing that is making a big impact comes from the drop protection. However, it depends on how it is falling and on what angle it is falling.

Gorilla Glass for Camera

Well, Corning has made special glasses for the camera lenses also. It means the camera's picture quality degrades if there are scratches on the camera lens, so to prevent that, special glasses like DX, DX+ are implemented so that scratches don't come easily on them.

Apple iPhone Ceramic Shield

You must have heard about the Ceramic Shield, which comes on the Apple iPhones 12. Basically, they have put a layer of nano-crystal on regular glass, and the nano-crystal is arranged similarly as a ceramic. It benefitted them in the better drop protection in comparison with any other Glass. Till now, only Apple has claimed this. No scientific research is being made yet to prove that the Ceramic Shield used by Apple is better than the Corning Gorilla Glass or Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Well, the glass not only protects you from a drop, but the design of the phone also plays an important role. If you have seen the design of the iPhone, it is made so that if it falls, then the design of the iPhone will save it somehow. In other flagship-level phones, they curve the screen, and because of it, they have to curve the glass also, and if it falls on its side, then it will surely break, as the impact will be more on the curve glass and the chances of damage will also be more. Nowadays, the design of the phones is more exposed as it comes with more curves, because of which they are becoming less durable. If you want to see good scratch resistance after level 7 on the mole scale, then Saphire remains the only option for better scratch resistance. Still, the problem with Saphire is that it becomes hard because there is no flexibility in it, and it easily breaks with any external force applied to it.

On a general level, the protection that you can from any Glass like Panda Glass, H3 Glass or Dragon Trail Glass, etc., have many similarities. Most people don't care about reality. The major reason behind that is most people are using tempered glass or a pre-applied screen protector which comes with the phone. So when you interact with the screen, you're not interacting with the glass. Rather, you're interacting with the plastic over that glass. Definitely, you'll not rely on the Corning Gorilla Glass. You'll rely on the external case and the screen protector. Most of the people will do so. Nowadays, if someone is buying a new phone, they will obviously care about the phone's protection and use it with a cover or a case. Because of these measures, people usually miss the use and feel of the interaction with the glass. Well, you should remove the screen protector and cover of your phone and use it some time. You'll not feel that you're using your phone.

Gorilla Glass is More like a Marketing tool

Well, Corning Gorilla Glass is good, but these days, it is used more like a marketing tool to attract customers and justify the price of the phones. These have become a term of marketing only which have no use in day-to-day life. This means the user experience of the mobile phone won't change. If it is there, then it is good, or else it won't make any difference in the user experience.

Well, this was all about Gorilla Glass. It doesn't matter how good the glass is. It will break if it is meant to break.

That's all for this post, stay tuned to CERadar.
